Seriously, I never set out to be a writer...After graduating from Case Western Reserve University with my PhD in Chemistry, I was off to find fame and fortune in the chemical industry. It was my good luck to be involved with the introduction of a series of new technologies; first as a scientist and later in a sales and marketing capacity.
My short stories...A divorce in my mid-forties introduced me to an alternate personality; the writer. For a few years I was the serious chemist and salesman by day and a writer of short stories by night. I learned how to organize stories and how to accept rejections. My short story WINTER NIGHT was published in The Ridgefield (CT) Press on December 9, 1981.
I always wanted to work in New York City...Growing up in Ohio was nice, but I certainly wanted to work in other places. That would include stops in Philadelphia, Wilmington, DE, Detroit and Stamford, CT. Suddenly, I had a new wife, a home in Westport, CT, and a new job as a Marketing Director for an Italian chemical company located in the Grace Building on 42nd Street in New York City. When it came down to earning money or following a dream, I chose earning money and would set aside writing,
My novels...The passing of my wife Gloria eight years ago was a traumatic event. I needed a new direction and work commitment and focused on writing. Over the next eight years I wrote 7 novels. With each novel my writing skills improved. Joining the Monday Night Writers Group hosted by short story author Nancy Christie had a positive impact for me. Working with a developmental editor on GOODBYE JACKIE SNOW taught me how to stage the drama in my stories. While I continued to receive rejections for my novels, there was encouragement as well.
What's next...An eighty-thousand-word murder mystery doesn't write itself. After sending out queries for SMARTER THAN YOU MURDERS I took a three-month hiatus reading books by my favorite authors, improving my lawn and flower gardens and relaxing. Going forward, I plan to edit and upgrade my existing novels. These are stories that deserve to be read with characters that jump off the page and outcomes that surprise. Coming soon: GUILTY CONSCIENCE, A Murder Mystery.
